We are now in February. Only eight months left to go until the convention. With the thread I hope to present some things to do around Town. Each month I'll add a little more. If you have any questions along the way I'll be glad to answer them. (If I can)
I'll start with downtown.
http://www.bennington.com/bbc/images/street.jpg
This is the center of Bennington. It is a short 2 blocks from the hotel. If you are shopping for souvenirs this is the place. Lot of cutesy shops. http://www.bennington.com/downtown
Downtown is where Carmody's a popular Pub is located. http://www.carmodysirishpub.com/images/photos/bararea.jpg
http://www.carmodysirishpub.com/ Right across the street is Madison's
Downtown historic church. http://www.vermontcatholic.org/Parishes/Church%20photos/SacredHeart-Benn.jpg

Looks like we will be closing down Carmody's a couple of nights. What do they mean in their web site that "smoking is premitted"? Is that like; you have to smoke "pre" entering the restaurant?

They have to update thier website. Last year they made it illegal to smoke inside any public building. Period. Even private clubs like the Elks and VFW must prohibit smoking.

Robo, I hate to say this, but I've seen your picture and it looks like you've a wee bit of something else in your family tree besides Scots/Irish. Maybe a little speck of Hebrew thrown in there for good measure?

On my license I look like a Middle Eastern terrorist. I used to be paler but have developed a bit of a "swarthy" outdoors look as I got older. Mum was a Birch, so I suppose I am English on her side. I don't like to think about having connections with England though.

Here it is March already.
If you like history then Bennington will be to your liking.
A good place to start is at the Bennington Museum. This is where you will find the orginial "76" Bennington Flag. It is the first American Flag to use Stars and Stripes. Plus they have Grandma Moses' School House and many of her orginials.http://www.benningtonmuseum.com/images/home_building.jpg http://www.benningtonmuseum.com/index.aspx
We have several covered bridges that you can drive over. Before you do that you can go to the covered bridge museum and learn the making and history or them.http://www.benningtoncenterforthearts.org/VtCBM/exhibits/Bennington%20Covered%20Bridges.JPG http://www.benningtoncenterforthearts.org/VtCBM/http://www.aesd.k12.ca.us/Picture%20File/Vermont/images/Henry%20Covered%20Bridge%20Bennington%20VT%202_JPG .jpg
You may want to pay your respects at the Bennington Battle Field. The battle actually took place in NYS. The Green Mountian Boys jumped the British forces before they reached their objective--Bennington http://nysparks.state.ny.us/sites/images/bennington.jpg http://nysparks.state.ny.us/sites/info.asp?siteID=1
And of course there is the Bennington Monument. http://rds.yahoo.com/S=96062883/K=bennington+monument/v=2/SID=e/l=IVS/;_ylt=A9ibyiApOg9EJbQAVlujzbkF;_ylu=X3oDMTA4NDgyNW N0BHNlYwNwcm9m/SIG=129f9ok2e/EXP=1141935017/*-http%3A//www.kirksidemotorlodge.com/images/monument.jpg

Here you go boys. This is a link to Orvis. They make them in the next town up. (Manchester). You can get rods from $99. to $995. They have a stocked pond out back of the store were they let you catch and release while trying out the merchandise.

If it was physically able to be done, I'm sure one of our local yahoos would have attempted it.
I don't know of any laws against it. But I'm sure as soon as someone get stuck half way up it and the FD has to get them down. Then I think they will make it against the law.

How long would it take the horse drawn fire truck to get there?
Can we see the horses when we are there?

Here is another great place to eat. I forgot about this place because it is not in downtown. But a lot of locals go there for lunch or dinner or just for a drink. It is in North Bennington a little town about six miles out.
