I have searched far and wide on and off this forum for additional information about The Refrigeration Institute. Is the curriculum relevant to today's HVAC equipment? Will this help me get an apprenticeship with a Union shop in NYC (Trane )? Also are all books, tools and other materials provided for you with the tuition? I am sure a lot of these questions should be addressed to the school itself but I'd like to hear it from a former student or two. Also is there anything I need to do to prepare to attend this school? Furthermore if you attended this school or know someone that did it prepare you to start your career effectively? I really appreciate any input.

I am a student at TRI currently...you'll learn everything you need to know. Frank Talty has a good relationship with the president of Local 30 which doesn't guarantee anything but definitely does help. He has gotten many students into the union. Books and tools are included in the first (down payment). You don't need to know a thing coming into the school.

Local 30 is the same as Local 94 except they are in the outer boros West/LI...all of Manhattan is Local 94 on the building engineers...if TRANE hires you as an apprentice as they were looking for one or two there recently and out on LI they will get you into 638 steamfitters within 45 days of being hired being a building enginner is a wate of time if your going for an HVAC experience.95% of TRANES work is building contracts on the hi rise office buildings big time maint.servcie and winter work...might be a good time to re connect with them

So I went and saw The Refrigeration Institute and Frank Talty was an extremely knowledgeable and friendly guy. They really know how to run a school over there. I am just wondering if I could benefit from a degree in this field from say TCI in NYC? Anyone have any experience in dealing with this school good/bad/indifferent?

Looks like after looking into a couple other schools and running (not walking from one) I will be attending The Refrigeration Institute come January. I am really excited to get my life in order and start a career I can really appreciate. Thanks for all your input this board has been invaluable.

Now a days you should. It was a good school when I worked there in the eighties, then they got money hungry and started taken all the welfare garbage. :gah:

Um, doesn't the local union in NYC have an apprenticeship training program?
I wouldn't waste your time and money paying for some a/c school when you can go through the union training program.
Down here in Miami I went through local union 725 apprenticeship program. All you pay for is books. And you'll receive the very best training available.
By the way Trane is probably the best factory to work for.

I worked there a year ago and even though there was some garbage, i wouldnt tolerate it in my class. Since i left, the program has gone wayyy downhill. There are a couple guys still there i can vouch for but the other instructors............

I am thinking about the 450 hour Refrigeration Training Course at The Refrigeration Institute. How often do courses begin in that school? I hope it is not to late to start in January.
