Ive hooked everything thing up like normal. AC works but when I turn it to heat only the fan comes on. Of course the heat strips are left out. Would this cause that to happen? I thought heat strips were optional. Any help on this would be appreciated.

There is no reason, that I know of, why you can't operate any HP without the auxillary strips. Are the t-stat and outdoor unit wired correctly?

which fan??
recheck all your wiring.
sounds like your t-stat wire is not right. Is the t-stat you have listed for a HP?

I rechecked all my wiring, everything is wired but common and brown going to heat strips. AC works fine, compressor and everything comes on. When switched to heat, the blower fan comes on, no compressor, no condenser fan. this is a brand new 4 ton 410a Goodman HP package unit. Never had a problem on a new installation.

Why would you not have supplemental heat? Is this a dual fuel? What is your balance point?
Does the HO know they don't have emer heat back-up? Do they know it will be cold air during defrost?

You don't need heat strips. Heat should work just fine. Jump it out at the unit, to check.

There is no code for sup heat in a heat pump. No you don't have to have sup heat for the heat pump to work.
Did you leave the sup heat plug bypass in?
Check the wiring diagram, something on your wiring hookup is wrong.

Sounds like a wiring issue. Heat pump thermostat used?? Proper 24v wiring to units? What about the plug on the goodman ahu-- what wires are there for you to connect to??

Find the wiring diagram that shows no heat strips. They are not required.

Are you getting 24 volts to the outdoor unit when calling for heat on the Rev valve or Compressor? .... lets start there.
Oh wait did you say its a package unit ?

most heat pumps that i see in California don't have heat strips.
sometimes it's a comfort problem when the weather is cold during the rare times it needs to defrost.

Sounds like someone doesn't know how to hook up a tstat for heat pump. WTF, tie the white to the yellow and be done with it.

What kind of stat? Is it set up for Heat Pump? Sounds like its set up for a Straight Cool, turning on fan to run heat but no strips to energize.
That is my guess.

What did you find out was wrong?
Still would like to know the conditions that sup heat was not used?

david do you have a htpmp- t-stat? is there a broken wire in the cable?
could you post the M# of the unit? also why would you not install heatstrips on a htpmp in our climate? at the bare minimum 10 kw for supplemental.
do you have the goodman tech support number?

take the t-stat wires loose and conduct a jumper test ... then tell me which component failed... the cable or t-stat.

Let's see! He has a goodman. It works in cooling. So he must have a "O" terminal. Don't ya think?

David your question "can I install a heat pump w/o heat strips?" Sure you can but why would you?
Is this true on all your heat pump installs that you don't install supplemental heat?
I'm with Jeremyhall on this one, you need supplemental heat in this area.
How long have you been a tech?

Im not a DIYer and i was installing this for a friend/neighbor. They bought tstat and all materials. I was trying to help them out and save them money. They also installed the tstat which in most cases is foolproof. A jumper wire had to be added and they didnt do it. I just ASS-U-Med it was hooked correctly and tried to find another problem with it. It was one of those cases if i can do this myself and this myself how much will that save us? I will know next time. i went crazy trying to figure it out. thanks for all the help, and not so much for the smart ass remarks, but its all good. I look back and see how funny and stupid i was.

They also wanted to leave out the heat strips because they have wood heat for backup. I didnt recommend it but they were the ones paying, not me.

David,
If I was out of line, I apologize. HVAC is my passion and sometimes I get frustrated with some of the post that are posted by seasoned techs.
Three people you shouldn’t do HVAC work for: Church, friends/family and engineers.
Good Luck David and stop by Tri-County Tech sometime and say “Hi”.
