Manitowoc Cuber Model QD1802A

Incoming power terminal. This unit is rated 208/230 1PH and 28.8 amp min circuit. It is on a 30 amp breaker.

I do not trust plastic terminal blocks over 20 amps and here is the reason why and what happens when it gets too hot.

See how nice it marks the top of the ice maker?

See what happens if you don't catch it in time?

How about this view?

Can you see what the terminal block (what is left of it) it up against?? Is it the terminal block mounting screws? Yep!

They said the flames were 5 or 6 feet high but the ceiling tile was fire resistant. The staff grabbed the fire extinguisher and put it out then called me at 10 PM last night.

Yeah.. Happy New Years! They have 3500 people coming tonight for their celebration and only the one ice maker left you saw in the first picture. Ohhh Boyyyy..

We pulled the terminal block out of the other one and tied it together with wire nuts.

Sooo, what those plastic terminal blocks boys!

That’s what happens when the Bean Counters get involved! “Yea we can save 25 cents per unit".

Just 1 question. 30 Amp 2 #10 wires. Shouldn’t that be a red bug nut?

We found it like that..

We removed the yellow nut and the old terminal block....

Used red nuts and the yellow on ground... taped/insulated and closed the lid.

Isn't that just a special way to start the new year? ;)

Start by selling a 1800# machine. That sounds pretty good to me.

That problem was covered in Manitowoc's Service Communicator #SC162 way back in May of '04 for all Q1300 and Q1800 before a certain S/N.

Don't you go to class any more? ;) :D

Those are great pics.....What a freakin' mess! I can only think back to some of the ones I've already fixed. If that had happen to them the whole building would have gone with the icemaker.

The customer was sent a notice on this problem, but probably like all my customers, they had tossed it in the circular file.

For those of you who know of any machines the fit in this category, check them out and get them fixed. It's under warranty even after the 3 three-year limit.

And yes, Lusker.....the official Manitowoc fix is wire nuts. :D

Here's a link to the Service Cummunicator page: http://www.manitowocice.com/Service/ServiceCommunicators.asp

Just scroll down to SC162.

You must have been missing on the day we taught computer links 101. :D:eek::D

Carrier rooftop units are shipped with short wires already torqued in place to the contactor. They figured out that the installers could install wire nuts, but didn't worry themselves with inch-pounds on contactor lugs.

The Hoshi I installed the other day had just a pair of wires & a ground lug.

A pair of wire nuts & you're done.

Great pictures, and thanks for the reminder.

I love calls like this. I think it's cool. They don't care about price. Insurance will cover this one. A nice shiny hoshy, plumbed all out to the nines.
