How do i ensure that my check valve is working properly on the oil reservoir. From the racks ive looked at we have a 5lb check and a 20lb check. Is the 5 for low temp and the 20 for medium temp?

no, thing to consider is oil float max.inlet press, usally 30 psi max. inlet pressure.
So the 5 or 20 lbs on the reservoir venting are in the the 0-30 lbs range of the float

to check operation .....simply closed the outlet of the reservoir and watch if the pressure equalized with the suction .....

Take into consideration what oil float you have at the comp. Really comes into play when there are multiple suction groups on one rack.

Ice, to insure your check valve located on the top of your resevior is working properly, close off the outlet valve located on the bottom of the resevior, and then after the float assembly on the bottom of the oil seperator dumps into the oil resevior, the check should relieve the pressure in the resevior to 5# or 20# lbs higher than your suction pressure, or what ever size check you have located on the top of your resevior, also yo can put these check valves in series with each other to create a higher pressure in the resevior, if needed.
Ex. a 10# c.v. & a 5# in series would give you 15# pressure.

.....the 30 psi max. inlet pressure. (above mentionned by myself) should have been :

the 30 psi max. differential pressure

uh what?
Piggybacking check valves is a really bad idea-
you cannot rely on this "acquired" setting.

seriously- if ya did this (and left it as completed work order) at our company you would likely be working on the help wanted pages PDQ depending on who got drug out of bed on the callback.

Buy an OCV 20 and keep the (5 lb) change!
