The word on the street is that nobody likes to work on Saturdays in this business.
I'm trying to get a job as a helper on Saturdays. I'm in my second year for my Hvac degree in Bridgewater, NJ.

coolwhip, you must have your own business. I,ve been on call 24/7 for almost 30 yrs now, it just becomes part of life. The new people coming into the industry don't seem interested in working after hours but to me it's all part of customer service. I just make sure they are aware of how much $ before setting foot out the door and the call starts when I leave and ends when I get home.

Rmuntz that was my first thought this guy works for himself! I know the feeling. I will say I am more productive and happier o. Saturday because nobody else is usually on the site.

Same here, I told a customer on Monday he should have called me on sunday, as soon as he knew there was a problem.....I could have fixed it sunday instead of taking NON SERVICE AGREEMENT people on Monday.

Yep...been incorporated and on my own for 10 years and have to go when ever that phone rings. If I don't go, then someone else will. This is my simple motto that keeps me motivated most of the time.
Believe me, I get burned out and sick of it sometimes...it even makes me gruppy.:grin2:
Its just part of the price you have to pay to be self employed these days.

Hey, you could always hire other guys and pay them to be on call....then you could be an adult babysitter.

That becomes another job full of its own frustrations. Have you seen todays workforce?
It consists of androgynous sissy boys that wont show up on time, and want top pay with no experience.:Faint:
There are some exceptional lads out there...very rare though.
Thats why this country couldn't rebuild its infrastructure if it wanted to...all the work would be subbed out to China probably.

I'm on a three week rotation for Saturday and Sunday calls. The Sunday calls are rare, though.
I don't think you could find a Saturday helper position. I've never heard of that one. Usually, if it's a job that needs a helper, a tech will call someone to come out that doesn't need instruction or oversight. Other than that, the major work gets on the schedule for first thing on Monday.

Phone is fowarded to my cell phone. If it rings, I go. Simple reasoning is customer service. if they had to call off hours, they are in a problem.

We have a weekly rotation between four guys, once a month is not that bad. But with 3-4000 customers in New Hampshire some of those winter weeks are torture. I recently had a chat with my brother in law, he has a great job at a insurance company, he has been with them for 15 years, and just got his seventh week of vacation per year. He wanted to know if I would hire him to do service work. I had to give him a reality check.. very few of the people that are hired make it more than one winter if they are new to the industry. Finding people that are even interested in doing heating and plumbing work is getting tough. I guess it is job security for the rest of us. Lit a fire in the fireplace tonight, get rested up its coming.

It helps to have 42 techs at our branch for residential service. We have 2 that work Saturdays as part of their regular week, 2 sunday guys, a night guy 6 nites a week and a nite guy for the other nite then 3 or 4 guys on the on call team to back them up. Our weekend consists of friday and sat about every 6 weeks. Big change from working for myself being on call 24/7.

When you are on call: it is wed. to wed. You get the oppertunity to do sat, sun, and all of the weekday`s. there is commercial, Industrial, residential. We have a couple of manufactures accounts, Supermarket accts. Chain store acct`s. just to name a few. When you are called to work on saturday or sunday after hours also. You hop in your truck and go get it. I am not an owner but he writes my pay check. And I like what I do.

Thanks for answering my question. I did find a side job last Saturday helping put up sheetrock. I'll change my ad to general laborer/ handyman on Saturdays and see if I have luck .

I don't mind working some saturdays here and there been hard for me lately since I have a 2 month old at home. With me being in house maintenance most of our Sat work is scheduled and there are three guys onsite. We do however get the occasional after hours call usually a fire trouble or something minor. All the house HVAC is off at 6pm so we dont have to worry about that either.
