The evap outlet is about 3 feet below the compressor. Evap & compressor superheat is 10 degrees but the suction side of the head and crancase are covered in ice. What's a guy to do?

if it is a walk in freezer it is common at times that the compressor is frosted. if you have 10* superheat at your evap outlet thats fine, but if you have 10* superheat at your compressor then your overcharged with refrigerant. take subcooling and superheat readings and this will all peice together on whats happening inside of the system

make sure the metering device is the correct one in size and refrigerant, and is not sticking with moisture in the system or miscalculation of superheat.
you could always get a four foot ladder and cut off a foot, get a three foot hose and check the charge, after de-icing it?
make sure the element bulb and txv bulb is insulated, and located correctly and attached correctly!
