Was once told that when cars transitioned to R134, the fin spacing on the evap became closer and that is why newer cars are prone to DSS (Dirty Sock Syndrome) (i.e. that mold and mildew smell).

Did anything similar happen when coils went from using R22 to R410???

Are R410 coils more prone to DSS than R22 coils in a properly operating system??

No DSS is not related to fin spacing and no fin spacing did not change with the change in refrigerant types

The refrigerant the coils use isn't related to DSS, however more manufacturers are using all aluminum coils that under the right conditions have more trouble with DSS. The fact that R410a and all aluminum coils are becoming more and more popular is a coincidence.
