if all you're going to do is call, just shows how lazy you are.

there are enough clowns that think they deserve something for no initial effort

if you don't have the initiative to turn in an application, what kind of employee are you going to be

I'll have to agree with the above... it may be a rude comment but it starts and ends with the truth.

Job hunting is way beyond frustrating but a part of the times. No one is entitled to a job, you must work for and earn it. First step for me as a business owner is character. If all you do is call me the answer will be no thanks. Burn some shoe leather and go by to say hello. Always keep a resume with you or a personal contact card to leave with the company. It pays to be prepared for anything.

Not everyone is hiring, not everyone will want to talk to you but to keep calling is a form of harassment. Just is what it is.

I have to agree with the other comments. If someone calls me looking for work, I will talk to them once and invite them to come by in person. I will even schedule a 15- 30 minute meeting with them. Subsequent calls are not taken unless I have met them.

You should also dress up at least a little. Suit and tie not required, but showing up in a "Buttweiser" t-shirt and shorts puts you on very shaky ground (that happened to me recently). You should dress like you would if you were going to work, or better. And if Buttweiser and shorts is how you expect to work, you're barking up the wrong tree here.

Bring me a one or two page letter in which you tell me why I should hire you along with your resume'.

Be prepared to explain the refrigeration cycle, superheat, subcooling, TXVs, and the effects of altitude on heating and cooling. Be able to tell me how you would diagnose a bad compressor (including the effects of liquid refrigerant collecting in the compressor on your readings and how to compensate for that). Explain to me how you would check to see what caused a compressor to fail so the new one doesn't fail too. Tell me how to use a micron gauge and why that's important. Tell me how you keep up with the industry.

We hire knowledge workers, or technicians that we believe will become knowledge workers.

If we connect, then I may take your call every two or three weeks. I'll give you an honest update of where things stand. But it wouldn't hurt to pop in and visit now and again.

Good luck

My day tends to be hectic until at least 8:30 or 9:00. My office people know that if an applicant drops in unannounced while I'm here that I at least want to meet them and shake their hand. I like the chance to experience that first impression, and I tend to think that many of my customers will react the way that I do.

I may not be typical, but my office people also know that if someone calls and says they want to come by to get an application or leave a resume' that they can schedule an appointment so that I will be in the office when the applicant comes by. I'll talk to you whether or not I'm hiring.

All very good points. The only time you wanna call is if you read an add and it specifies you to call. Going in personally is the best way because they get to meet you and put a face to the resume. Trust me places get tons of resumes each week that become just pieces of white paper. If you go on ask to speak to the owner/manager/or shop manager. And if they are not there find out when they are and come back and if not leave your resume but call later or the next day to find out if they got it or not.
