The metal threaded cap on top of the high side valve (where you connect the gauge to) is loose. Does freon leak out of there? What is that part call? Thanks!

Yes it could possibly leak and if I understand you correctly it would be a King Valve cap.

If the valve is is in good condition, no. If worn, the seal can leak.

I haven't see the liquid line valve on residential equipment referred to as a king valve, though.

I'm looking at this again, and since you didn't offer a picture, I'm thinking you might mean a service port on a line, too. There is a valve inside that service port connection, as well as a hex socket valve that has a larger hex cap where the line leaves the condensing unit.

If you mean the valve core in the service port, then yes, they certainly CAN leak. Have your HVAC professional check your system for leaks, and replace any defective valve cores.

Yes, that cap can and will leak. It needs to be tightened down.

Either the king valve or the service valve can leak. You can do a simple leak check with gas leak detector available at a local hardware store. Slather it on the area in question, and watch for bubbles. If there are any, call a pro. If not you can put the cap back on and tighten it yourself.
