I was wondering if I could get some advice from the board. I have my project narrowed down to two companies. One of them proposed installing a Lennox G61MP-36B-071 two-stage furnace and the other company would be installing a Trane XR95 single stage furnace (60K BTU). I live in central Ohio and wonder which would work the best for my home. Also, with the two-stage furnace...should I purchase a two-stage STAT or use the single one proposed?

My home is two-story, 2000 SF.

Thank you.

2 stage adds some comfort to the house. Definitely go with a 2 stage stat.

2 stage provides better temperature and humidity control, so if the cost difference isnt and issue, go 2 stage. Make sure the thermostat is designed for two stage applications though, as if it isnt you wont reap the benefits of a 2 stage system and will have wasted large quantities of euros or rubles or whatnot.

I have also heard that if you purchase a two-stage furnace, you should get one with a variable speed motor or you lose efficiency Is that true?

You wont loose efficiency. But you will gain efficiency with the vari-speed and save on electrical operating costs. Pay more up front but it'll qualify for fed tax credits that will help cover that cost. Good thing if you circ your fan to keep temps even and air cleaner.

So, everyone would still go with a lower end Lennox two-stage over the Trane XR90 single stage?

Why not go with the Trane XV95 that is a two stage variable speed matched with a TCONT 602 or better thermostat for two stage control?

I would def. jump up to the Trane XV model but I don't like the extra 700.00 price tag. I don't plan on staying in this home for very much longer. I just want to get a good system put in so the next owners don't have to worry about it. I am also switching from fuel oil so I should be in good shape. Is the Lennox G61 two stage furnace not a good one?

The G61mpv was lennoxs top of the line a couple years back. Variable speed being the difference. You'll be suprised how much you don't need 2nd stage. Both are good go with your gut.

If I decide to go with the Lennox, since it's two-stage, can someone recommend a good two-stage stat?

BTW, thanks Tempted for your thoughts on my situation.

Definately the lennox unit. I was not impressed with trane after seeing quite a few failures of the collector box--which required replacing the ENTIRE heat exchanger at only 3-5yrs of age. And its not cheap to replace a heat exchanger!!!

Seeing as you plan on selling, the G61MP will do the job--if your looking for efficiency and getting rebates--the g61MPV is the way to go. Both excellent IMO!

Honeywell Pro8000 or if there is not enough wires to run the two stage heat then the Honeywell Pro IAQ stat.....
