Greetings:
Working in Central Wisconsin. I spent 20 years as the HVAC guy for a plumbing/heating company, but got the 'royal boot' in late 2007. Two years of job applications proved that a 55 year old guy wasn't going to get hired, so I formed the LLC and went on my own.
I do heating and a/c, and love doing elaborate control systems, but still do the mechanical relay logic circuits, and have not learned the digital stuff. I might, haven't decided yet.
I am about the last guy around here that loves residential size oil burners. Everybody else just holds their nose and tries to convert 'em to gas.
Looking forward to learning stuff from here, and maybe even helping sometimes.

I think that's when they heat up those aromatic oils for a full body massage.

solid state, 'analog', as opposed to digital. Mechanical relays wired together in a 'boolean logic' system. Not really re-programmable, like a digital device could be. I guess a very simple system would be a typical thermostat that throws a relay in the air handler to turn it on, IF none of the safety switches are locked out, AND all the end close switches are closed. It can get as compex as it has to be.

You mean stuff like latching circuits or two-hands-no-tie-down safety circuits and stuff you might have to draw out on a ladder logic diagram? All with some stupid relays and wire? ;)
DasBoot, my comment was meant to be funny!
