Need some opinions. I have been in commercial/industrial air conditioning & refrigeration for 15 years. I am the lead tech. at the current mechanical contractor that I work for but I am always looking for the next step in the hvac field. Other than starting my own business would working for say Carrier,York or Trane be the next step in my career? Or just stay content with what I am doing?
All opinions would be appreciated.

working for the manufactor is not always better. you would think training is more available and it is not. i find branch managers only worry about a bonus so they try to cut everything out. they are not all like this. best thing to do is talk to techs that work for them. if you like where you are at dont jump ship to quick.

After doing the same job you describe for 15 years I also started looking around. I wanted something steady, minimum overtime for the family, decent wages and retirement package.
Went to work for Lennox and never looked back. I work at the R&D facility, started out as the lowest paid technician there 25 years ago. I can't imagine working any where else. Love my job and the people I work with. On top of a decent salary our fringes run about 33% and there is more training available than I could possibly ever take.
It's not for everyone but I know of no one that came to work at Lennox that didn't love it. There are hundreds of different job opportunities within Lennox. We encourage employees to seek out areas of interest. I have 65 technicians that work for me and I lose 6 to 8 per year to other internal job openings, mostly tech support and sales positions.
Good Luck, in what ever you do.

A "large" commercial manufacture is currently looking for a training manager for commercial and or industrial equipment. They just called me and I told them I was content but would pass it on. Of course your experience along with your ability to develop training programs would be required.

I love my tech service job, after 25 years on my knees doing service work. I was looking for EXACTLY what you described.

It's consistant with the 3 companies that I've heard of openings at in the last 5 years, adjusted for the area and tax burden.
