I finally decided to ditch the jeans and get some real work pants. Jeans start looking bad way to fast, so I'm looking for something that will last, and present a more professional image.
I'm looking to pick up at least 5 pairs. Why do we say a "pair" of pants when it only one item anyway?
I am willing to spend as much as $40 each for real quality and durability. Made in the USA is prefered.

I like the Red Kap brand myself. Best thing to do is go to Sears. Try on some of their stuff. They got Red Kap, Dickies, Sears Brand, Carhart and another one I can not think of. Once you find ones you like how they fit and the size, you can order the pants online from some outlet very cheap.

I can answer the history part about why we call them a pair of pants.
Pants when first worn, consisted of two separate legs with a loop on the top. Then a belt would go throught the loops to hold them up. Then a tunic or loin cloth was worn to cover thier a$$ and software. The idea was to protect the legs. Of course you needed one pant for each leg or a pair of pants.

Since you're going away from jeans.....hard to beat Dickies brand. They're about as hard to wear out as an anvil.

Dickie's didn't last me long at all. I gave up on uniform pants and went to carpenter jeans long ago. Now that I have the pliers pocket I would be lost with out it. Funny what you do with a pair of Klein side cutters in a pinch.

This from back in the day when you walked uphill to and from school Bennie? :D
I wear the Red Kaps, Dickies to me always looked cheap and man are they scratchy! I'm going to go to carpenter jeans for Winter if I can find any big enough for my massive belly.

Tried A&N carpenter pants. They work well and the extra pockets are nice. Lee has the same pants I believe. 16oz. denim. They wear well and don't fade like jeans.

Red Kap
The dress pockets are SO much easier to get stuff in and out of than jeans, besides you don't look like you are going to feed the cows.

Carhartt. We get something like 10 pairs a year, and they are around $40 a pop. also Carhartt thermals.

I quit wearing uniforms when I gave up the filling station job. I have never liked the way they looked, and I felt cheap and trivial.
I prefer to chose my own style and wash my own clothes. If I had many employees uniforms would become mandatory.

Man Mark, you're making us look bad. ;) I did the work pants and black work shoes, yes Red Wings, for many years. I decided to go with jeans, dark blue ones, and Justin steel toe work boots. They look good if you change them out often enough. I got tired of sweating in my work pants and seeing the salt stains after they dried, which come to think of it wasn't very often, the drying that is.
I buy Rustler jeans at Wal Mart. They are nearly identical to the Wrangler jeans at twice the price, but don't have the fancy pocket stitching and brads. They are around $10.00 a pair. So cheap you can swap them out every few months.
Dickies are good too, support the local economy, buy Dickies for the work pants.

Columbia fishing shorts or any popular brand and white T shirt or in the summer and a pair of Rayban or Maui Jim's. Wal-Mart jeans in the winter which is about 60 days.
I use to not wear socks but after paying $1,000.00 to clean up a toe nail, I wear them now.

We have no choise but to wear Nomex. Pants, shirts, winter hoods. Acid suits and full alumnized suits. These plants will keep you safe even if it kills you. This clothing is very hot during the summer. Sleeves rolled down and all buttoned up.

Until I retire. Which will only be 3 years away. Its not fun anymore. The bad times have out weighed the good times. All I need is 3000 a month. Cheryl and I can live in a school bus instead of this big house. Roy

If I were frequently getting laid, I could live in a cardboard box.
Has anyone tried the work pants that incorporate pockets on the knees to allow for slide in knee pads? Seems like a great way to help those concrete floor knee aches. i believe Skillers makes some in this style. Any experiences?

Carhardt & red kap shorts in the Summer, then the full Carhardt garb in the winter, it does get to around 0 (32c) here at times.
