Hey guys/gals,

I ran a call Saturday afternoon (of course AFTER the supply houses were closed); and my fan puller (remove fans/blower wheels from motors) broke (threads stripped from housing, cannot 'pull' anymore). I borrowed one from a friend... and did all my calls over the weekend.

Thought I would run a thread and ask folks which fan/blower puller you like, why, and how much it costs. Please post manufacturer so I can find the one... THX!!!

the Ultimate puller works pretty well for me. I never tried anything else. I like it. What were you using?

Sandcloth, rustbuster, and a cresent wrench takes care of most of them. I only use my puller twice a year, I don't even know what brand it is.

I am honestly not sure what brand it is... it is skinny and long... made of aluminum, and uses 3 allen wrench cap screws to tighten on the hub.

The threads in the aluminum 'neck' stripped out...

I have used it for most every 'pull' for something like 5-6 years.

I borrowed the short wide unit made of steel with 4 square nut set-screws... I did not like it much. Too hard to center on the hub.

I wish I knew the manufacturer of mine... I kinda like it.

Well... I guess I should just do a little googling... this is the one I have now:

Yea that's also the ultimate pulled. Most united refrigerations stock them. They work well.

I have used this one for years... I am used to it. I guess one made of steel might not have the stripped threads issue (or it may well)... I do remember a year or so ago I put waaaay too much torque on it once to pull a blade... probably damaged the threads at the time and they gave over the weekend.

I did not like the Supco puller (or one like it)... it did not center well.

Just ordered an 'ultimate puller' from ClimateDoctor online. Price was $43.95 + $$10 shipping (no tax).

THX for the input guys! This is one area H-talk shines!!!

Just an interesting note: AFTER I broke my puller... I had two more calls over the weekend... It has been a LONG time since I had 3 fan motor calls over the weekend (remember I am a one-person show).

If you put the 90˚ ends thru the middle and run the bolt out it will hold everything for storage.

I keep all the 'parts' in a heavy freezer bag... and keep the puller handy. Use the little angle metals only rarely. The main part is the jewel IMO.

THX for the post!

Sorry :o

The Jmart stores in Atlanta are part of a franchise, I have never seen any sales there. And the counter guys are jerks... I do not do business with them.

THX anyway though.

I have these also and they are great but they don't work on a blower wheel by themselves.
I saw somewhere a hub with set screws and a grove so you can use this type on a blower wheel hub but don't know where to get it.
The other one was so cheap I just got it for the blower wheels.

There is a hub kit available. I'll have to get the number off of it tomorrow.

What you want is Posi-Lock kit HP-2. I have had this kit for years, and it kicks butt over the ultimate puller types (all of which I have owned and broken).

Here's a link to the Posi-Lock kit at Johnstone:

Have to keep my eyes open for one like that. The one I use for pulling bearings is tuff, but have had to use rubber bands on horizontal shafts.

The ultimate junk puller just never quite cut it when pulling larger, rusted in place blades.

I've got an OTC 2/3 jaw puller with a bearing separator that rarely fails.

When the motor is bad, though, I just saw the shaft off and beat the stub out with a hammer and a drift pin.

Didn't like the ultimate puller - I also stripped out the threads. Also, its too long to fit into some applications - I couldn't get it to fit into the blower of a Middlby marshal pizza oven...

Replacement was the shorter steel one (not sure of the brand) - works great.

I bought a new ultimate puller... The new one has a steel insert for threads (rather than aluminum threads like the old one).

Understand about clearance issues on some specialty equipment... I do not have that issue on resi stuff.

OK, so I don't have a puller yet and I've always wondered how those 4 set screws can get a good bite on a smooth hub with no indentations, and pull the blower wheel off without just slipping off. Does anybody have the problem of the hub adapter just slipping off??

I haven't had a problem with it not being able to grab anything. If you tighten the screws, loosen, then repeat, it really bites hard. Just make sure you don't get on the set screw threads.... It does leave a small mark but that's more like a badge of honor!

ok, this has worked every single time for every motor for the last 5 years.

first, spray the shaft with some pb blaster, let it soak for couple minutes, take your saw zaw and cut the shaft right at the hub, take the puller and pull it off. i use the posi-lock 104 with the hub kit.

I've lost track of time on this one but I know it's at least 26 years old. Don't remember the brand but I got it from Insco- probably Maco !?

I've hit it on the head with a hammer a few times and used a pipe wrench on it before.

Still works. I remember it being $40 + back then. All steel and heavy. Came with the arms, but I never used them but once to disfigure a fan.

I just sand the motor shaft really well then spray Kroil on it, let it soak for a minute then hold the shaft with a crescent wrench and give the blade a spin. Works great for blower wheels, but sometimes I have to break out the Ultimate Puller for condenser fan blades.

BTW, Kroil is pretty expensive (like $11 per can), but a little goes a long ways..plus it works way better than any other brand out there, IMHO.

Same here,

I have bent the bolts for the separator on stubborn hubs.

These work well with a bearing separator. I turned the forcing screw down where it would go into a 1/2" hub.

That 110 weighs about as much as sackfull of hammerheads (16lbs!)... you must be in pretty good shape lugging that thing around with you...

I have penetrating fluid, a couple of big old brass drift pins and a ball pein hammer, if that does not work, then more extreme measures are stored at home...
