i think it will help you, and you might like it. you'll be dealing with trouble shooting dryer vents and dryers which are almost like a gas furnace, solonoid valves involving water, customer interaction, electric line/low voltage, mechanical aptitude. you'll be fine, you just don't know it yet. learn all you can, trust me, it's a very positive learning exp. also the new units have computer controlled settings, programming, again, this is a positive, learn all you can!

I started out by doing appliance repairs, learned how to fix just about everything. Go for it, you won't be sorry.

Don't forget odd stuff like motors that are 6hp in one direction and 1hp in the other, 24 cam controls where there are 12 cams per rod and they make and break the entire wash, extraction and chemical dispersal.

those units are very intricate, he'll learn a lot, that could be applied to hvac,

I don't think it would hurt you career wise. Troubleshooting and repair of commercial laundry and kitchen equipment is very good for building your experience with electrical and mechanical systems. I did a stint with a large holiday inn and conference center and other than the fact the pay wasn't great the work experience was great.

I was interviewed a couple of times and was being considered for a job like yours for a laundry company. I wanted it bad too since the pay was way better. The job was local but the companies office was 4 hrs away and they were trying to keep it confidential locally because the new hire would be replacing a very senior long term employee they were looking to remove. Go figure, the HR dept didn't inform the district manager that they were looking to replace one of his guys. He had a tech already on staff that wanted to move down to my area and take the job and I ended up losing out....
