Whats everyone opinion if a heatpump is to be installed in Southern IL. 1525 sg ft walk out with conditioned basement.
What are the advantages of a varible speed indoor fan 1 stage vs. a 2 stage unit or dual fuel.
Also, Rheem vs. Trane in this situation.
Can you oversize a 2 stage for heating reasons, with ac on one stage?
Thanks

VS is comfort.
2 stage is also comfort.
You can't oversize that much, you'll still need a back heat sourse.

3-ton, 2-stage might work for 1,525 S.F.
Is 1,525 S.F. actually the TOTAL area?
4-Ton would likely be overdoing it and perhaas result in higher relative humidity than you might wish.
Load Analysis is needed to determine more specific matches.
4-ton on first stage would 'act more like' a 3 ton.

Opinions DON'T really Count ...
(but they do 'get you in the ballpark')
Analysis and matching equipment does!

In the midwest, 1525 sq ft is 2.5 ton tops. With shade, 2 ton would probably cool the place. 3 ton is unheard of, except maybe with the worst hack. We build our homes better than some areas of the country :D
High SEER won't pay around here. Buy it if you want bells & whistles. For comfort, a standard scroll heat pump with variable speed blower will do just fine. If you want better humidity control and the model you choose doesn't have a ramp up mode, put a simple humidistat on it to slow the blower in humid weather.
Rheem vs Trane is a matter of preference. I don't like a recip in a heat pump, I find a scroll heats better in cold weather. The old Climatuff recip just doesn't put out the toasty warm air like a scroll.

In Memphis a house with 1525 sq feet better have a 3 ton. If not, there will be some irate people in July when the temps are hitting 100 plus.
