I have two 3 tons Heat Pump units in my house. They are both Rheem and are 14 1/2 years old. Both are working fine except the upstairs Air Handler's pan is rusted and has blocked the drain line more than one time. So, in planning what to do, I guess that I have following choices:
1. get the pan repaired (costs b/w $ 175 - 500)
2. Change the air handler and replace with varibale speed air handler;
3. changeout the upstairs with a new 13 SEER 3 ton R104A air handler and condensing unit (var. speed also) and new digital thermostat.

A. Can anyone comment on these choices. I am leaning towards changing out the complete system, however, it is very expensive.
B. Do I need to change out the copper lines (7/8")if I go with choices 2 or 3.
C. The lowest quote is $ xxxx for a Rheem and $ xxxx for either American Standard, Trane or Carrier. I am leaning towards AS as they are offering a free 5" filter. Any comments here.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

At 14+ years, time to boot. A higher SEER variable speed system would be nice. Usually best to change lines if changing refrigerants but if you have no history of leaking and they blow them out well, probably could keep. 7/8" gas line is bigger than what A-S calls for in a 3 ton R410a system.

Only way to know on price is get bids from local contractors who know local costs and can see the job.

I have received a lot of conflicting stories from HVAC Contractors on the merits or demerits of Rheem, which I have had good experience with. It has lasted these 14 1/2 years.

Does anyone have anbised opion on whter Rheem is good and AS/Trane better? Or does it matter. Both offer same warranty (10 on Compressor, 5 on Condenser and AH)?

It is not as much the brand of the unit. It is who installs it.

The 14.5 years you got out of your existing system should answer that question! You won't find unbiased opinions. Opinions are like #$R#$# and everyone has one!

I handle York.

I'd take the Rheem before AS/Trane.

Thats my bias opinion.

I'd check the features and benefits of sveral brands online or ask here.Top of the line systems have added several features based on the variable speed indoor fan, that improve your indoor comfort. There several IAQ (Indoor Air Quality) features ti look at as well, many controled by the "system".

Yes they will cost more, but if they last another 15 years ,it's pennies a day .
What's your indoor comfort worth to you.
