1982 Lennox Pulse

A friend of mine has a 1982 60K BTU Lennox Pulse. For years she has had problems with ice build up on the exhaust pipe (2" Dia.)
This ice will block the exhaust opening and shut down the unit. Is there anything that could be done to stop this ice build up? She is getting older and the exhaust pipe exits the roof of her ranch style house in the Chicago area. She will get up there at times and break this ice away. For years the installation company has been servicing this unit. They have no solution for this problem. The whole system intake and exhaust is piped in with 2" PVC. The intake pipe is cut away one foot away from the furnance. It may have had some blockage, so they just cut it away, and are now using inside air to supply the furnance. Should this unit have been piped in with 2 1/2" PVC? Is this Pulse unit heat exchanger covered by a life time warrenty? Thanks

We have always used a 2 x 1 1/2 reducer on the exhaust with about a 6 inch piece of 1 1/2 pipe completing the termination. This speeds up the exhaust and tends to keep it from freezing, we have never had a problem doing it this way. The intake needs to hooked back up, it was probably freezing over as well from the re-circulation of the exhaust. 2 inch pipe is the proper size for the intake and exhaust for the 60,000 pulse and yes the heat exchanger has a life time warranty.

first should never pull intake air from inside. the exhaust should be pointing straight up and have a reducer 2in to 1.5 in and a 10 in piece of 1.5in pvc pipe. this way the water will flo back down the pipe and should not freeze. this is in the install manual. the intake pipe should go up and then goose neck down so rain and snow isnt pulled in. any other way of pipeing it is wrong. should have the heat exchanger tested every two years by a lenox dealer. they should know how to pipe the unit properly. call lenox and they can give you the name of a dealor near you.

exhaust pipe thru attic and exposed on roof should also be insulated.


lifetime warranty is only to original owner. if house is sold it reverts to 20 yr warranty.

If G-14 might be under recall,call Lennox dealer and ask them. but sounds like insulating might help. Dealer should have install instruction or maybe left at your home. Have them out if you have them or give them heads up so they can bring them.

there was no recall, there was an inspection years ago that during time frame of inspection Lennox paid to pressure test annd inspect pulse furnaces made prior to 1990. once time period ended regular warranty terms apply.

How many years does your friend want to squeeze out of this unit. She has about 23 now and is going to try for how many more? There was a testing program given out to pulse owners free, and a furnace exchange program but both have expired. Too bad she didn't respond.

Swap it out. How much equity is there?? Can't take it with you but CO will hasten her journey to the other side.

Consider at least a pressure test by a competent Lennox dealer and start there. Why did they have to vent vertically? A little ole lady on a snowy roof with an axe frightens me.

furnace exchange program has not expired. if she is original owner lennox will provide a new 90+ heater if heat exchanger fails, she would pay for install. have a dealer who knows the furnace do a pressure test and correct venting problems.
