Not all of us do it. I can't say I change the oil after every use but yes the pump manufacturer wants you to change that oil after every use.

I change it when it tips over and spills into the back of my truck. LOL

before i became self emplyed, i work at a heating and cooling place and i never once saw them change the oil in the vac pumps and they still ran fine and did the job, but i would push it that far for res. i'd go every other or every 3 or when it tips and spills, it depends on if you have a VAC PUMP use charge in your invoicing :)

Water in the vacuum pump oil will reduce the ultimate vacuum that the pump can pull down to.

I don't see the need to replace the oil in the pump unless the pump is unable to achieve the desired vacuum level. Blanking off the system during the evacuation process will give you an indication of what the pump is pulling.

I pull down to at least 500 microns. Depending upon how contaminated the system is, I've gone several pump-downs before an oil change.

Ideally after each use change the oil.

But being practical about it, when you are installing evaps and ACR linesets that have been dehydrated and if you purge with DRY nitrogen on the job, I think it's a safe bet you you don't have to do an oil change every time.

Just don't let the oil in the sight glass get milky.

I try to change it every month usually (4-6 pump downs), but almost all of what we do is new.

If I pump down a used unit (had a leak or something) then I'll change it more often since it likely pulled more moisture through the system.

If for some reason I pumped down a nasty acid filled jello oil'd system I'll change it right away, let it run (pulling a vacuum on my gauges usually) and change it once more to flush all the crap out.

I change it more often when working on burn outs or used systems. On new systems I don't see much difference in changing it that often. Also make sure the outlet port on the pump is capped off when not in use, other wise it is just sitting open sucking up water. A cap from a garden hose set will fit quite nicely.

I have always wondered if air or moisture could get in an contaminate the oil in my JB vacume pump through the handle exhaust. Never really thought about putting a cap on it . I had thought about taping it shut with electrical tape in the winter when its not used as much and I do put new oil at start of summer being it has been sitting. Interesting , I think Im going to have to keep my eyes open to see if Ican see a garden hose cap next time Im in a hardware store. Dont have a clue what one looks like??????
