What is the best way to add central air to an existing large colonial home with oil hot water heat. The second floor seems easy with ducts in the attic but the main floor is the problem, a second system seems logical but I don't want to kill the full basement with ductwork running all across it to cool the 1st floor.

depends on the layout of house. some houses we are able to install a/c in attic and bring some ducts to 1st floor thru closets or boxing in corners of a few rooms to use as chase for ducts. never did one but other option would be high velocity system with very small ductwork.

as t527ed stated, it depends on the structure and access. You need to have a professional out to provide you with the proper choices after inspection of the existing conditions.
