IF the grids are kept clean, and IF they are put back in dry is there a rule of thumb regarding the life expectancy of electronic air cleaners? I need to know if I should replace one that has been working fine for 17 years when I put in a new oil fired furnace.

You're lucky you got 17 years out of it.
They do make better air cleaners nowadays.

IF you took care of it, that would explain why it's lasted.

just what is better about today's units, even in comparison to the 1960s version?
