Last year I had a media filter installed right before the indoor coils when my unit was replaced (old coils were fouled badly). The installer told me that I didn't actually need to use the 1" filter right at the return grill. When I removed the 1" filter, it made an unbearable whistling noise. For the most part I just leave the grate open without the filter there. I'm trying to sell my house and don't know what to do with it now. I feel that leaving the 1" filter could add unecessary air flow restrictions.

When I replaced the media filter I noticed that the new indoor coils look sparkly clean and new. Media filter seems to work well being sealed into the system.

Thanks,
Jason

The whistling noise sounds like your media filter caused too much restriction and the 1 incher was muffling the noise.Return duct might be undersized for that highly restrictive filter if it is clean. If it is dirty than that might your problem.

Could also be grill is too small.

The grill size is under sized and possibly the duct connected to it. Bend the bars in the opening of the grill so they are not restricting the air flow as much and it should stop the noise. If you bend them to far you will be able to see into the duct, you can paint the inside of the duct black so you cant see anything. This won't fix any airflow problems other than the grill restriction and noise.

I am going to have to learn to type with two hands

Since I am midway through selling the house I think I should better leave the grills alone for now. I think I will keep one of the thinner 1" filters in for the new buyer.

I have another issue regarding the buyers inspector that I think I should write in a seperate post, regarding temperature difference at different registers. She had variations of 6 degrees (td of 12 to 18 in the house). Since I've been home I've checked and they've been within 2 degrees of each other. I wonder if she let it run long enough, or maybe since it was 100 that day, their was some heat gain in some ducts.

As far as typing with two hands, try one of the split keyboards.

I wouldn't do that.. if you leave the filter there, they are not going to go up and look in the attic to see if there is another filter (media) on the furnace.

I agree with the other guys,s the grill opening is too small or space between the grill is too tight.

Their home inspector pointed out the media filter in their inspection. They should know about it since they attended the inspection. I also have a box of filters in the attic right next to it. The grill is as big as it can be in that hallway, it's 16 x 25. It is between a hallway door, and the attic door.
