Hello,

I am looking for a contractor in Tucson, AZ. I have a simple job (I think): I want to replace my swamp cooler and old heater, probably with one of those machines that have everythinng in one box (they seem to be the most "popular" choice around here; I asume that's for a reason), but I am open to other possibilities.

Does any one know a reliable contractor? Last year I called two guys, one from Home Depot, but he quoted me some super expensive brand (Trane I think), that was way over what I thought was reasonable, specially taking into account that I had asked a couple of friends in similar situations and they had paid much less; and he did not seem like he wanted to really inform me, he just wanted to give me a number. The other contractor quoted something else (I forget the brand), but it was more reasonable.

I have read in this forum that installation is really important, so I tought I would ask if anyone knew a reliable contractor. Thanks.

The Carlson Company (520) 623-3918 - 1010 E Fort Lowell Rd, Tucson, AZ

I was employed there before moving to the midwest and I highly recommend giving them a call.

Dave and James,

I thank you both for your recommendations. I have a couple follow up questions, which stem from reading a recent thread in this forum ("A comment about the trade" or something like that) that has generated quite a few responses and seems to have angered some contractors:

1. How many bids is appropriate/reasonable/normal to ask for?
2. What kind of work/evaluation should I expect the contractors to perform while at my house for the bid? Taking into account that it's their time they are investing.
Thanks.

James,
First, I thank your for taking the time to reccomend someone.
I called them on the 29th, the day after your reccomendation, and they said they would get back to me to schedule an appointment. When they didn't, I actually went there this past Saturday (Oct. 1) and talked with the same secretary that answered my call. She said she had given my message to Mike (I am not 100% sure about the name), and even showed me the copy of the message, dated on the 29th of Sept. She said that she would make sure I got a call that same day to schedule an appointment. Didn't call. I will wait until tomorro (Tuesday), but to be frank it has already given me second thoughts about them. I will keep you posted on what happened.
