Hi, I'm a student studying Construction Management and I need to know the steps of doing a takeoff for an HVAC system in a new home. I have to teach this to a class and I want to know how some of you would go about estimating a project. Let's say a General Contractor has sent out a bid for the HVAC on a custom house. How would you go about getting this done.

I have talked with a few trade contractors and most of them say they just know from experience what it will take. I guess I'm wanting the "long" way. For instance, doing all the heat loss and heat gain calculations. How do you decide on the right size unit? Anything will help, thanks.

1.Manual J to determine the correct size

2.Manual S to select the proper equipment

3.Manual D to design and size the duct correctly

All from http://www.acca.org available to all.

It takes all three to do it right, rules of DUMB, just don't get it.
