I have finally decided to buy a G5. Our units are old Amprobe 6000's and they have served us well but they are not exactly quick. In looking at the G5 it appears it will be about 2x faster.

The reading I have done on this model leads me to believe that I need to get a 3/8 in line for the unit and a in line filter. Then I noticed it has 1/4 inch fittings.

Wont that 1/4 inch fitting reduce the 3/8 effectivly to a 1/4 as far as flow?

Not that new hoses are that expensive but I have plenty of 1/4 spares.

I am looking forward to the G5 and the incresed speed. The first job i have for it is a recycle center where we pull around 40 pack air units. Should shorten my day some.

Or at least I hope so.

I used the Appion G5 twin on a York 3 Ton microchannel to recover R-22 and it took me about 10 to 15 minutes. Highly recommended.

You'll be happy with it

Just got one, have about 5 hours runtime on it so far. Great for liquid recovery. Gas, not any faster than my old Stinger, and I miss the purge feature on the Stinger.

Glad to hear you're giving us a chance, let us know if there's anything we can help with (you can always call the factory and chat with someone for tips, questions, support, etc.)

You will get a 1/4" flow for liquid, but that is also the size of fitting on most recovery cylinders. If the G5Twin went much faster on liquid, you could overload the access ports on the cylinders and create a whole host of other problems.

However, during vapor recovery (the bulk of the job), the difference between a 1/4" and 3/8" fitting is usually nominal (unless you have 3/8" or larger fittings on the system AND 3/8" or larger hoses), and you will still get excellent speeds.

One tip I always give to get the speed of the G5Twin: keep the cylinder COOL. Moving refrigerant quickly heats it up, cooling the cylinder keeps things fast. Put the cylinder behind the G5Twin so that it is pulling air around it, and you can get a significant temperature drop on the cylinder, and much better speeds, all without an ice bath.

Dunkman, try recovering into the vapor port of your cylinder, and use an external gauge manifold before the G5Twin. When you are done recovering, close off the manifold, and let the G5Twin suck the hoses into a slight vacuum, and clear out the hose into the cylinder.

The purge feature on other machines uses the compressor to clear out the cylinders of those machines. However, the inefficiency that builds up with use on those compressors can lead to a significant amount of residual refrigerant inside the compressor crankcase, and should not be relied upon for preventing cross-contamination.

By using the method above, you will get the same results UL does when they do their testing, which verifies the de minimis amount of residual refrigerant in the machines. The G5Twin does this without separate purge mode, because it never channels refrigerant through the crankcase.

I bought a used G5 a few years back. I needed a few parts for it, and the guys at Appion were very helpful and the unit was easy to work on. She is beat and battered but it still kicks arse. Some day I plan on getting a shiny new one. I love that it is so small and light, I only wish the hose fittings were a little higher up so my hoses don't get bend fatigue, but hey hoses are cheap. I have taken my recovery tank and set it in a 5 gal bucket, and put a hose in the bucket and turn the tap on, makes a water jacket with the ground temp water 58* here it helps a LOT.

Love mine so far. Have only used it three times on 3 ton units but was a snap and didn't take long at all. The unit I had used before couldn't recover liquid so it took forever. Im happy with the G5 so far.

I use 90 degree low loss adapters.

Hey Chris, I have a G5 and last winter I had to use it on a below freezing day. When I filled her up with refrigerant I heard it leaking inside. I figured something was loose. I took it apart and everything seemed tight. I borrow a coworkers and his did the same thing. Do we have something wrong with ours or is this normal?
