are canvas (flex connectors) required in the r/a drops of an rtu?

They are only "required" if specified. I use them only if the return is a trunk or plenum, not when the return is just a drop box.

I agree that they are not required by code, but by specification. But, it is good practice, especially in an RTU drop. It is a good idea to isolate any piece of equipment that has a rotating fan with a canvas connector to prevent vibration noise in the space.

More noise comes thru the curb RO than thru the duct. If the grid ceiling is not touching ductwork and the RO and curb is stuffed with insulation you will have a silent installation. But hey.......thats only what iv'e learned after installing a couple thousand of these things, ten tons and under.
