this unit appears to be working good but then it starts slowing down, then the compressor goes into convulsions for a few seconds and then cuts out, the fan is still running. If you turn it off for 10 minutes or so then restart it works fine again. I check outside temp at the condensor, it's 145 and inside at the evaporater is 65. I was going to take the front panel off to test some electrical parts and notice the unit is plugged into a 50' cord. The prongs on the end of the cord are almost black between overload and dirt. I clean them off , check the switches and a basically just a visual inspection, everything looks fine. There was no other way at the time to plug the unit back in with the 50' cord so I plug it back in there. Now the unit runs with no issues plus it's colder now. 54 degrees across the evaporater now. It ran for 20 or 30 minutes before I left with no problems. I told them they need to at least find a way to get rid of the extension cord. Shortly after I left it started cutting out again. there is an overload protection that I think is probably causing problem especially with that long cord connected. This is just a friends ac unit, not really a "customer" but I am going to go back in and delete using the 50' cord. do you think I'm on the right track or something else? according to my charts those temps equal 220hiside/52loside for R12

I'm no authority on window shakers, but first off, I didn't think they used 12 in them. Sure it isn't 22?

Regardless, 145 is pretty high, isn't it?

The extension cord is a HUGE problem.

WHOA!!! Did you say 54 degrees across the evaporator? As in 54 degrees difference between entering and leaving air?

You are going to burn something.
Get the thing wired by pro. in your area, quick.

Yeah fix that power or it going to burn the place down. Or if your lucky it will only shoot a pretty, high pressure fire ball out of the compressor.

well that's what I was saying, the cord is the big issue for me but you can't always make people understand what happens with electricity and using long extension cords. they think they are made for using where ever and for what ever. and when it's nearly 100 degrees outside that makes people do anything to try and stay cool.
its a window unit and the wall socket is just about foot out of reach for them to be able to plug into it.
and it is R12, I'm not sure how old it is but it is an old Emerson.
