ECM=variable ??

This furnace maker's website is inscrutable as to whether their various models are multi-speed, variable-speed, etc.

Since they are skimpy on particulars, I looked at their product-data-sheets to see if the models of interest had ECM motors.

But then, if a furnace does have an ECM blower, does that invariably, err, always mean that it is a Variable Speed furnace??

Summertime, does a Variable Speed furnace operate at one speed only, with a 1-stage compressor ?
2-stage compressor ??

Variable speed is sometimes a misguided suggestive name for the ECM. Often it is used as a constant CFM which, in a backwards kind of way it means it will speed up and slow down as the static changes offering the constant CFM. Variable, may mean to many that it changes speeds based on load for some reason. It does not.

The benifits of the ECM motor, provided a proper duct system are constant, exact CFM at a lower operating cost than a standard PSC motor. They also have the ability to alter the CFM via input from a second stage or dehumidifcation function.

Without acting all salesman like, the mod90 is the only furnace that uses more than a few CFM speeds.
