View Full Version : replace gas line, purge furnace?

Neighbor damaged her natural gas line and needs to have it replaced. Gas is off but the gas company needs to replace the pipe. Will her furnace needs to be purged of air? Alot of gas leaked out before the gas was turned off and I assume the line is full of air now. The break is near the meter (no fire involved). If it needs to be purged, is this something I can help her with or does she need an HVAC tech.?

She will need a tech. How will you recognize if anything is wrong? A tech will have a monometer and be able to set the proper outlet pressure on the valve.

Thanks for the replies. I will have her call for other help if the gas company will not do it for her.
Do new furnace installs have to be purged as well? Or does the gas valve on the furnace keep opening and closing automatically until the air is out and it lights?

the if its a newer furnace, it will try to light a few times before locking out. however, you don't need to worry about it, because the gas co. will come in to light the pilot on the water heater, stove, etc. tell them to make sure the furnace lights too.
