I recently started renting a new home from a friend. The furnace in the house is a lennox g20. Since it is getting cooler I decided to make sure the furnace was working. I turned on the gas (two valves were shut), put the cover back, and flipped the switch to on as per the manual. The unit buzzed a bit which i figured was the damper. Then i went upstairs and set the thermostat about 15 degrees above ambient. Nothing happened.

I am wondering if it is possible that i missed a simple required step of startup or if i should just call a serviceman. Thanks

You've done everything! Now it's time to grab the yellow pages and call a licensed heating contractor in your area.

Make sure that the blower compartment door is on properly.

The gas may have been shut off for a reason. I would have a professional come and inspect the unit to be sure its operating safe and efficiently. ;)

Cause, we all know that you want to save money (on fuel) just like everyone else. And you don't want a catastrophe from an unsafe unit.

Thanks guys, just wanted to be sure that my morning call to a serviceman isn't a dumb one. We'll see what he says.

The buzzing is the sparker trying to light the gas. I was thinkin' along the lines as Jules, GOT GAS? :D

buzz was probably the transformer, g20s don't buzz they click for ignition.

Which on is G20? If it has a Dura-Curve HX it needs to be inspected.

g20 has the damper door and yes it needs to be inspected.

Also you need to get that spring looked at, the one that makes the switch on the damper door. They usually break at midnight when it's 0 degrees out.

Hey, Baldy, did you think that a G 20 unit was a "goil" unit) maybe the 'G' stands for gas... duh!

Jultzya is still mixed up in the interpretation of the "site rules", which state as follows;
"HVAC Pros, please note; Homeowners are WELCOME to ask questions here, if you do not wish to be helpful that is FINE, but do not intimidate,obstruct or criticize those that wish to be more HELPFUL than YOU"
IF,you do not like a particular thread, then,..... do not reply.
get it?
