I am a forth year Tinner and I really dig HVAC. I work for a damn good company that takes care of thier people. My problem is that I want to move to residental service but they have no positions open. I dont want to go somewhere else for 2 reasons: I cant take the pay cut and I dont wanna risk leaving a good company for bad one. I'm thinking school but I dont know where to start?

make the suggestion that you would like to move into tech and if they are a good company they will take your concerns into consideration. And if not, always try to learn. Listen to the conversations the techs are having, and figure out who is full of bs and who is not. Read as much as you can. And good luck.

if you have a good job hold on to it.
i don't know what things are like in your area, but here in California HVAC companies, especially residential, are filling their calls with temporary employees.
i expect this "sales" based strategy to spread across the whole country soon.
i'm attempting to get my contractor's licence.
if i don't get it, i'm out of the trade.

I would suggest discussing your desire with your current employer. They may have a need for someone that can do sheet metal and residential service.
If your company is a good one, they will listen.
If the company isn't as good as you think, you will be replaed.

Performance based pay.
No one will be doing residential for an hourly wage.
Customers will be wondering why their stuff is hacked in... or why it doesn't work. Fine by me.
