Hi Guys,

I'm trying to learn more because I need a new furnace (converting from oil boiler to gas before I end up in the poorhouse) and have not had much luck with contractors so far. Out of 6 I have called, only 4 actually showed up and out of those 4 only two bothered to give me a written estimate -- one guy called to tell me it would be *************but never followed that up with anything on paper.

I'm not sure if this is because I'm female, or they just don't think I know anything. I know one guy didn't like it when I started asking for specifics on what he intended to do. I've never heard back from him. It's getting depressing to have the cash in the bank to pay with but not be able to find anyone reputable.

If you are in this business please don't stand us up, ignore us after wasting our time, or try to sell us the highest priced with no discussion. We do remember and with the internet we do talk.

For those of you who are honest businessmen/women and treat your customers well...God bless you. :grin2:

Welcome to the hunt. Your problems with contractors aren't just because you're a woman, but that doesn't help.

The people here can help if you post details as you go. Make sure the contractor you select does a Manual J load calculation to properly size the equipment.

Sorry, I threw the price in because it covered such a range and made me think the contractor didn't know what he was talking about. Since he never sent me anything on paper he probably didn't.

No one I know has had furnace work done in years. The one guy who did plumbing for me last year never returned my phone call even after I called a second time. I get the feeling they don't need the business. Gee I wish I was that well off...

1- glad you found the place to get the best info

2- as previously stated, it's not a female only situation, it's slack contractors

that tend to rest on their reputation or perceived reputation

3-there are a few on here from up that way, since you didn't narrow it down
