I have been working on large commercial RTUs and air handlers and I am not as familiar with heat pumps. We have some commerical buildings that use air source heat pumps for cooling and heating. Not a good set up but thats not the point. From my research I know that you need to use a bi flow liquid line filter drier. What do I use on the suction side, can I use a removable core drier. The reason I ask is we had a burnout and I am cleaning it up and would like to put a removable core filter in so that it can be changed out after a few days of run time. Thanks for the help guys.

Ended up being a bad burnout. I was able to get some pancake type suction filters to put on the suction line before the reversing valve so I don't have to worry about the flow reversing. Only thing that sucks is that I am going to have to change them possibly up to 3 times. But it is what it is. Thanks for the info

Put a valve on each side of the filter so you don't have to recover the entire unit to replace it.

Doc Havoc I would love to but it is so tight in the unit (air to air heat pump) that I am lucky I even have the room to put the filter drier on. I only have 2" of pipe between the 2 90's and the smallest lenght valve I found was 3 1/4. Luckily it is only a 3 ton unit with about 12lbs refrigerant in it. Thanks for the suggestion. I will post some pics when I am done. This is my first job on my own so pretty excited about it.

installit outside the unit if you can lock it in cool mode if they need heat use the emergency heat

Funny I didn't know they sold replacable core suction strianers for a small 3 ton unit. All the ones I've seen for 5 tons and less are the throw away kind. Thank you very much.

Who said anything about replaceable core?

I did say that I would have liked to install one but I didn't find anything. Next time I will install it on the outside of the unit like you suggested catmanacman. Thanks again guys for the suggestions.

It is good practice to install the suction drier in the true suction line on heat pumps , you definately dont want it in the discharge line. (heating mode)
Suction line between reversing valve and compressor.
They should also be removed after their job is done.
Pressure drop in the suction line , not good.

Thats where I put inside the actual heat pump on the actual suction line. Didn't come out the prettiest as I was less than an inch from condenser coils but it will do its job.
