Can I put a sight glass on a split system with a piston? If no why not?

Can you put one on? Sure.

Will it do you any good whatsoever? Nope.

I've been told that you only put them on txv systems.

So if it won't do you "any good" whatsoever, Well Boss have you got some other way to tell if you might have moisture in the system? O yes forgot you can take a freon sample down to the chemist and he can test it for you. :D

Will I overcharge the system if i clear the sight glass on a piston or cap tube system?

Using a sight glass as an indicator of a correct charge is never reliable for any system no matter what type of metering device you have. However, it is very unreliable as a charge indicator on fixed metering device systems.

The only real value a sight glass has is for its moisture indicator.

What method are you currently using to charge systems?

Subcooling on a txv and superheat on a fixed metering devise.

OK, then you have no need to install a sight glass for charging purposes do you.

I know a contractor that is having all his installers put a sight glass on every install. You know that everyone will clear the sight glass when they are charging a system. They will assume there is a txv.If they charge a piston system this way im afraid they will overcharge the system. We know what happens when to much liquid gets back to our pump.

Yeah, more service work for you!

have seen green moisture indicator on water cooled system flooded with water. i have no faith in them. only use for sightglass is reciever equipped refrigeration unit

You obviously had a defective moisture indicator in that sight glass. Don't condemn all moisture indicators based upon one defective one. Something was obviously very strange and out of the ordinary there.

I have to agree with the not-believing a sight glass for moisture theory. I haven't seen a flooded system with a green indicator, but I have seen a system holding 490 microns with a black indicator.

could have been a fluke. still have not installed a sightglass on residential a/c system in at least 20 yrs.

sure , there are other methods to tell if there is moisture in the system and a site glass could be 1 way , but not when you are charging a system with blend refrigerants, then a site glass and a chemist wont even help

O did not know we were talking blends guess I should have read the original post better.

Hey I re-read it and it appears he was talking about R-22 so that was what my response was related to talk about getting carried away off topic, wonder if you use jet fuel if a sight glass would be any good for moisture. :D

But I remember reading something in an automotive history book
once ( not to admit I am old )...no back in the 60's 70's on automotive systems , they all had sight glasses didnt they?

back then that is how I remember being taught to charge a system---add vapor untill you had a clear glass
