wet pipe going into outdoor condensing unit

got the crud out of the AC drain pipe w/ shop vac & it is draining well now. but noticed that the foam around the pipe leading into the condensing unit is wet for about 3-4 inches (not frozen) & pipe remains wet (not frozen) inside the condensing unit. do i have a problem here? foam is dry as it enters the AC unit sitting on top of the Carrier furnace. is it ok to run the AC? what needs to be checked? thanks, darc

If you are talking about the suction line (the bigger in diameter) There is no problem.

it's the bigger diameter pipe that leads into the condensing unit (1987 Carrier series 38, 11 SEER unit) that is wet about 3 to 4 inches outside of unit & wet inside the unit like the pipe is sweating. assume that is ok? thanks all for your ace advice, darc

its ok its wet because its cold and moisture from air is condensing on it just like when you set a soda on the counter

On a related point, is it okay to insulate the vapor line inside the condenser unit? I'm thinking all that ambient air blowing on it just causes an added heat gain for the condenser to remove.

Thats correct. I sulation is there for two main reasons:

1- to prevent condensation of the line being isulated

2- to isolate the line from the ambient air thus reducing heat absortion.

Always use 3/4 thick insulation for better results.
