I love them Friday calls, or emergency calls and the customer says, "It's been acting up all week."
I think little bastard sums it up nicely........:D

Try dealing with a guest in your hotel that doesn't have cooling and they are trying to get ready for a wedding. it can be a nightmare sometimes when their over your shoulder to watch what you are doing and it's about 10 mins. before you clock. :)

meat cutters are the biggest crybabies of the industry. they cry about a degree or two everyday. half the time thier case is right on target. i had one last week multideck running @ 28 so i lied n told him i lowered it fer him, he calls in the next day and says case is running great and would i lower the temp in the next case over. two points irk me about this, first off when i was there the first time,i specifically asked him if he was unhappy with any of his other cases, secondly if he would learn how to use a thermometer to check his case temp instead of a telephone, we would both be much happier. anyhow long story short i lowered all his multidecks down to 26 so ill be there next week to raise them back up when he notices his meats are freezing up overnight and he will be getting a bill fer it too. Oh yeah my all time favorite one is this "we never had this problem when the last contractor serviced us" when you know damn well he is full of crap!

The meat managers are usually the highest in the food chain in the store (excluding the Store Director,Manager and Recievers)
I think they are used to all the other employees looking up to them because they are high in pay usually. I believe their head can get a little swollen sometimes. Yes they can be a pain in the rear. Some of them are way cool , some I want to fling my 6 in 1 at.
They have the area Meat Director always on their ass to sell and not loose product. They are always bloody , and they always have the little old lady that needs that special cut of meat cut or ground up a certain way.
I wouldn't want that job for nuttin'

There are meat managers that will always try to use the refrigeration as their excuse for poor sales and even to cover up for poorer sanitation and housekeeping practices. Some of these "golden boys" get away with it for years, hopping from store to store.....with their bad meat, declining sales and complaints about the refrigeration following them.

We use a temp recorder, and send the findings along with the invoice and mfg specs.Sometimes we do find a small problem like to hot in defrost, and repair before we send the bill.when corporate see's this the market manager seems to shut up!!

Meat managers are usally not wanting the temp lower(they just say that), they are trying to say the meat is turning brown early.

Sometimes it is easier to dismiss them than to look hard at the case. I have often had good discharge air temps, but low airflow from the wrong blades, honeycombs plugged, partially frozen coils, plenham TXV covers missing ect. Also defrost duration and termination is critical.

I have had the managers use refrigeration to cover for over-cutting.

Just listening to you guys, I don't miss that **** at all. I do a few independants now but there small. At a time though I was running 80 hours a week doing chain market work. You can have it.

For some of you guys, alot of the other guys on here can not possibly compare the job they have to yours. So they have no idea what it can be on a daily basis. I know. You always think of getting out but what stops you is the money. I hated the hours. I hated the slave mentality, that my life and free time was not important, and that work always must come first. I hated the fact that jerry riggin superceded repairing it. Imgaine that. Your paying me a 100 grand a year, and not want me to use my brain and do my job. Life is too short than to spend it in a rack room. I am glad I got into other parts of the trade.

I will tell you guys something if you don't know already. You come out of grocery work and dive into other aspects like large tonnage RTU work, Controls. Man you'd be amazed. Not only would you all have a leg up and fit right in, you'd surpass the current guys doing it. Every Rack guy I have ever known has the kind of talent to jump right into other areas. (Most, I should say). I always say if a guy can do supermarket work he can do anything else.

Just had a Friday 4PM call, small joint I had just been there fixing ice maker and small freezer, twice this past week and just the day before, chef calls and says walk-in is running warm, like 50, the day when I was there the door on the old POS was always open, people in & out all day. I said awwwww man, look I am getting ready for a big party tomorrow and I am busy and...you really need to check the temp first thing in the morning on that old box........but....go check the condenser, is the fan spinning and is heat coming off it? Yep. Are the fans in the cooler spinning? Yep. Is the coil iced up? Nope.
Turn it down a hair and keep you eye on it, but IMHO it is OK.
Called them the next morning the guy said it was at 39 degrees........unreal.:D

A lot of little things have been building up and getting paged today on July 4th almost put me over the top.

First things first. Friday night after working until 630 I start to head home and the pager goes off for a Subway leaking water under the counter.

So I empty out the cabinet and I find a compression nut leaking water and of course it had nothing to do with the sodie machine.

I asked if they want me to snug the nut and see if that will stop leak? Yes oh yes was there answer. And I said if I break anything dont call me back.

BTW I asked how long has water been leaking out the cabinet?

Three weeks was their reply! THREE WEEKS!!! I almost went postal right then and there.

So now these dinks just called in for repair service at 12PM because their OJ unit is not working. It is frozen up again.........

I thought who the hell goes to McDonalds on July 4th. Who the hell drinks OJ on a July 4th afternoon?(Dice, you wanna take that one?)

I was so pissed. I said unplug it and someone will be out in the morning.

There is no rest for the weary....sigh..........

Whine-Fiesta.

Whatever happened to just doing your goddam job and satisfying your customers, and being thankful that you have a good job to ***** about and don't have to depend on a stupid "global" rock concert to send you and your kids some rice to eat???????????????????

Wah. Wah. Wah.

Hey Dave ... That's the spirit!!!

Dont complain about having work to pay your bills with!!!

And here's another bright side to this trade .... should a catastrophic accident occur and we become injured and no longer able to perform our job .... like .... we lose half our brain and most of our reasoning power or all of our common sense .... we could still be "productive citizens" simply by becoming Store Managers at some national chain!!!:D

Hey, I didn't start it.

And I didn't say they were always right, just that they have the pen and the checkbook, and I gotsta make damn certain that they smile when they receive the services I provide.

Dave,

You say that now, but there is no way in hell you don't get in a *****y mood about customers. Your lying if your saying never.

And. I personally don't do a whole lot of stupid calls like that, or have a heck of a lot of customers who would be that way. So. I make a fine living with out most of the bull****.

I wouldn't want to offend you, I have a lot of respect for you through this venue. Honest to god. I know your type. I was raised by your type. About 50 of them. Hard working sons a *****es. I played supermarket tech over the years.

Dave, not but a handfull of guys on here understand not only what area of the trade you are in, but what demands come from it. There is no greater than supermarkets. And every dedicated guy to that niche like yourself, well quite frankly your all a little nutso. I think you have to be to stay in it.

My point being. I am a wus. I hated that ****. I am a wus, but I make the same kind of living, with out the hours. A good rack refrigeration man turned into an HVAC guy. It' kinda like taking a Harvard Law graduate and stick him in the mail room. I run into guys that do a lot of heavy tonnage HVAC, and I see where there at in the skill set. That refrigeration guru can dance on their head.

But, the good thing is, you don't have to think as hard, work as hard, and if you do it right, you still make good money.

If you ***** to the customer, he does not want to hear it, he will not listen and your company could lose an account.

If you ***** to your boss, he does not want to hear it, he will not listen and you may lose your job.

If you post a ***** on HVAC-Talk to your peers, they want to hear it, they will listen and they will empathize with you.
