Canadian Load Calculation Standard?

1) Has anybody out there ever used the Canadian Standard F-280 procedure for calculating heat losses/gains for residences?

2) Is it any different from ACCA's Manual J Residential Load Calculation methode/procedure?

3) Which "standard" method/procedure should be used?

I used f-280 all the time for resi in Canada, the HRAI and Ontario Electrical league have a course to do it manually and used to sell there own dos based software.

Wrightsoft sells an F-280 version.

Prior to moving the Caribbean, I ran cooling loads for jobs on the islands using my F-280 software and checked it against manual j, comparable results.

The manual j software I have seen seems to ask whether your windows are partially shaded like 25%, 50% etc where as the F-280 asks you to input how far eaevs overhang windows and how high the eaves are above windows. F-280 seemed a little more accurate and has not let me down yet.

I still use F-280 for resi loads in the Caribbean.

If you are doing the jobs in Canada, I would use F-280, mainly because it is referred to in various provincial building codes.

F280 will have a method of approximating the air infiltration rates that is in tune with Canadian Building codes as the homes are more tightly sealed.

A fianl note on f-280 cooling loads is it only calculates the sensible load, you have to make an allowance for latent. The manual j software spits out a latent load for you, at least the ones I tried.

Hot Coffee, just outside of Collins. For the month of June, HDD 0. CDD 326. GDD 716. Moose Jaw, HDD 100, CDD 40, GDD 249. That's current for the month of June,2005. For the totals, I could go dig out the ASHRAE books at work.

And now for the best part. Hours of daylight today; Hot Coffee, 14hr,12min, Moose Jaw, 16hr, 24min.

I think you are getting shortchanged down there.:D
