Am I going crazy or is it true that you need a txv when using recip compressors? And start cap also.

For the most part sounds like crazy.
Only semi fact is that TXVs on a recip often require a hard start kit (start cap) due to the high head pressure at startup.

High efficiency TXVs are usually non bleed so the system doesn't equalize during the off cycle. Scrolls usually start OK against it though many brands are starting to put hard start kits on them too. But on a recip, you may not start at all against a non bleed TXV without one.
