I have a customer getting ready to build a new store he wants to do away with the exsisting split system refrigeration systems and go to a rack type system.
Iam familure with Hussman he is looking at three other possible mfgs Tyler,Hill Phoenix,Zero Zone. Has anyone got any input good or bad about any of these choices?

thats a pretty general question,if its just a run of the mill grocery store, you should probably look at the Tyler
or Hill stuff with Elec Defrost, the more you buy the beter deal you can cut so the Tyler,Hill and Zero Zone or pretty good. Not sure of your Area but Source Refrigeration makes a custom rack that is priced right but they would want the install I believe

Has your customer retained the services of a great consultant?

This is obviously new territory for them. They should not go forward until they have a suitable guide who is experienced in that particular area of the industry.

Some grocers belong to an independant grocers network where they can purchase stuff cheaper than independantly.

That store's greatest expenditure will be their monthly utility bill! They need to factor in every ounce of energy savings they can muster.

There's more to this than meets the eye.

We have installed mutliple manufacture systems, they are all good. Im more familiar with Hill/Phoenix cases. Very nice to look at and everything is easy access. Our last install was for a major chain in Kansas. Our racks are custom built by us and had two racks one medium and one low temp. Had all the bells and whistles. If your real pro at soldering, welding fab and have a supplier that can provide you with real support (compressor size, receiver etc), I would consider installing a custom built rack. Nothing looks better than admiring a good days work while your customer hands you a sizable check for your work instead of relying on another company. Just a thought, sorry dont have pictures of the rack, one day when I return to Kansas I will inevitably stop by and get some. By here in good ole Texas its just hot.

A RACK IS A RACK, SOME DO HAVE DIFFERENT BELLS AND WHISTLES LIKE TYLER WITH THERE SPR VALVE. BUT ONE THING YOU SHOULD DO IS TO HAVE ONE VARIABLE SPEED DRIVE COMPRESSOR ON THE RACK AND HAVE SUCTION STOP EPR VALVES. THE VALVES HELP THE CASES AND RACK STAY AT A EVEN SUCTION PRESSURE AND THEY ALSO ARE GOOD FOR DEFROST FOR ALL (HOT GAS, ELECTRIC OR NATURAL) . ALSO GET THE RACK WITH A GOOD COMPUTOR SYSTEM LIKE EIL OR CPC THERE USER FRIENDLY.

They became ECI a LONNNNNG time ago, and then were sucked up by Danfoss several years ago.

You can still get most parts for the 2K's, but you pay dearly.

I don't know how available the 1K parts are.

I'm pretty certain that anything earlier than that, such as the RC48, EC128, etc, you are outta luck on.

I've serviced hill phoenix,tyler,kysor/warren racks over the past several years. Really though they all perform well if the P.M is done as suggested by the mfg. if i had to pick 1 though..... probably the hill phoenix. although i have been working on some kysor/warren scroll racks the past few months being installed at stores of mine that are being remodelled. those particular racks seem to run very solid with little mechanical problems. Whichever he chooses i suggest the most oil side options the mfg will offer because it honestly is the MOST neglected part of a rack. anyway my 2 cents.

Hussmann protocall with Danfoss control package is the way to go. Saves you room and piping. Although its a pain to work on when it goes down, its rare that it will... very reliable system.

when consulting for a client like this, i would recommend getting into his head, prior to doing any legwork. find out his makeup, whether he wants a low budget system prone to service, or something better. once yo know what you are after, get a package from each vendor to meet his criteria, and finally see if you can get a sie visit at other locations with the STORE manager to find out what he likes or doesnt. explain to him what you are looking at and why. ie, this system uses variable speed compressor technology, which is better because.....this one uses such and such controls that monitor your system, and can.... a practical approach can make you look real good.

Copeland is making a variable capacity scroll that is a better choice than a variable speed compressor we have been seeing it on Walmarts new rooftop rack systems.
