View Full Version : Crane's
New fed regulations that past few months ago anyone working with crane's have to be certified . Took the 5 hour class at the hall and thought it was a nice refresher course . I was wondering if anyone ever got carded yet from the crane engineer ? I also heard that the three new nukes being built that the trade best suited for picking will do all the picking for all the trades . wouldn't it be nice if the fitter's get the job over the iron workers .
Attending a 8hr class tomarrow. was told all crane operators are checkin guys on job. they will be happy to supply an additional rigger/sgnal man for 110.00 an hr. thought osha had something to do with it??

Can you grandfather in ? And do you know the fed regulation code # ?
No Grandfather on this one . You have to meet 29CFR 1926.1428(A)(1) Signal person qualifications option 1

I don't have the code what is it in a nutshell ? You now have to have a signal person ? Does crane size matter ?
It's a new OSHO regulation that the department of labor pushed though in nov of 2010 . any size crane . I usually deal with the 60 to 250 ton's myself . It's a written and practical signal test . 40 question's test than a visual signal test of 4 crane movements .

What about owner /operators ?
What I was told in class it's only the person's involved in the crane's operation .
Yes, I was certified two weeks ago.
Not only do you have to be certified in signaling but you have to also be certified in rigging.
And yes, guys are getting checked on the large sites, I have yet to do a lift since last fall so I cannot speak for the service field.
Rigging ? Don't know about that one . The hall (597) class was about signaling and safety . Got a card that is good for 5 years . very interesting got to look into it .

Yes, we had to get both signaling and rigging certified. Not sure if that is an OSHA requirement or company requirement? I thought it was OSHA.
Yup, it's an OSHA requirement...

Re-read the fact sheet, you don't need to be certified to be a rigger, but you do need to be qualified. You can be qualified by experience alone, just got to get someone higher in the organization to say that you are qualified. Of course taking some training and certification would be a good thing.
And yes signal persons must be certified.

So do you have to have a signal person on all jobs ?

My understanding is that a certified signal person must be on the job if the crane operator can not directly visually see the whole craning operation.

I probably get a crane rental every two weeks, and so far not once has anyone asked for certifications. I called the hall, and was told that anyone who went through the apprentice program was a "qualified rigger", and that you are supposed to have a qualified signalman if it isnt direct eye contact from the cab. I then called my crane outfit and asked them about it, and was told they are working on getting their guys trained first, with trades guys later on. they say its too new to comply.

Did this job last April. As I was talking with the crane operator, he acknowledged about the changes that were to come later that year.
We have a Greenheck GB300 that we will be craning up and as of now, the crane company is not asking that we have a signaling and rigging qualified person on site. Not yet at least.

No, it got craned down. I already had the old old compressor out of the RTU before the crane arrived on site. Take notice how the line voltage was ran. Got to love it.

I seen that and edited my post after looking at the picture. We have guys here who leave old RTU's up there. :gah:

Look at the brightside at least they didn't mount the disconnect to the service panel. :grin2:

Yes it is. That job was done April 2010, with no issues to speak of.
Just finished class fri. Regs went into effect NOV. 8th 2010. Operators have untill 2014 to get up to date. Must have some one with OSHA training meeting regs 1926.1419 thru 1422 and 1426.1428 sig man and crane standards 1926.1400. they'er trying to standardize all signals and rigging requirements. In no way is the rigging portion even close to the halls classes on rigging certification

You do not need a qualified signal person if crane operator can see load at all times

I took the Train-the Trainer test it was harder than I thought it would be just because of habits your used to, just for an example there is no such thing as cable-up or cable down in this class, its hoist load or lower load.
Some one who has never signal a crane before would do fine in class.
It didnt surprise that the crane operators really struggled in the voice signal part of exam.
