I am having a problem with some Carlyle scroll compressors. Model # SRH752AC01. One of the welds on the casing that holds the stator in place leaks refrigerant and oil out of the center of the weld(see picture). I have 11 Carrier units M# 50TFF007 all with sequential serial numbers. I have had to change 12 compressors on 8 different units because of the same leak. I even had to change some of the replacement compressors because of the same leak on the same weld. Carrier tells me I am the only one that has had this problem. Thse units were installed in September of 2005. I was wondering if anyone else has seen this problem.

Wow! can't say I've ever had one leak there either. Are you finding it with soap bubbles or electronic?

That is the oil that is in the picture. You can see it bubble out the leak without adding any bubbles.

yes i have seen that problem, but not to that extent. have you trie fixing it.sand it down to metal use bronzflow or 45% silver solder on it and paint thats what i have done in the past.by the way remove the refrigerant first and purge with nitrogen as is proper practice

We had a building that we replaced 12 units with carriers. After about five months we were changing out compressors on a weekly bases. All had leaks in this area. Carrier didnt really know about any issues at that time. That was about five years ago. No problems with the new compressors, but after this issue was solved the condensers started popping leaks in the elbows. Just a bad run of units I guess. I have done a couple of yorks also with leaks in this port or welded plate area. those were Bristols though.

I had only seen one leak in that spot. Thought it was just a crazy one that you might never see again.
After reading this maybe there is alot more than i ever expected!:eek2:

I thought of soldering it with 45%, but if its a stator support, might heating it up cause mech damage if the heat allows any displacment of the stator? Just a thought.....

Its not worth it to try and fix this type of leak. I did one a couple years back, I got it to hold and seal using 45% and white flux. I went back there a couple months later and the system was flat. The compressor started leaking at another weld spot.

I have seen it twice, and when i picked up a new compressor at Carrier, I went strolling thru their return tags on the boneyard of warranty compressors and there were a few out there. I since have stopped buying Carrier products with their scroll compressors.

Ha they use Copelands now just like everybody else I guess.

Have seen a number of same leak issue over past couple of years. Also had issues with factory piping into compressors at elbows (found splits in outer radius of fittings, vibration caused copper to open up, like the fitting was improperly made--thin walled along outer radius). Customers couldn't believe it after running for a coulple of months, while under warranty. Not to mention boss wasnt very happy as well!

I have has this problem as well with scroll compressors in the 50 Series. I have seen the Danfoss ones leak as well. I went through 4 compressors in less than six months on a 2 circut system. But I know of at least a dozen of these type of leaks that occured on other job sites so your not alone. What you got was the typical CYA responce from Carrier.

I have changed out three of these so far that leaked in the same spot. Carrier knows that it's an issue. Getting them to admit to it, is another thing.

Seen that issue with York units at least 8 years ago, think Copeland scrolls but don't remember the manufacturer.
