I have a customer that purchased a brand new Compaq laptop to use for remote access. He could not get the computer to connect to any of his sites. Lonstation is showing a COM failure and saids to reset the modem. He took back the computer and upgraded to a HP with more features. The HP does the same thing. No problem connecting with other computers with same operating systems and service packs.

Sounds like problem is in the modem. We are connecting through a modem and SLTA on the other end.Wondering if anyone has this problem. The computers have the same modem -
CXT - Softv90 Data Fax Modem with Smart CP. Not sure if the modem doesn't like the SLTA or Lonstation. The US robotics modem on the other end will pickup but will not connect.
He'll either install a pcmia modem or take back the computer and get one with a different modem to see if he can get it working. Honeywell has no knowledge of a problem with that modem. If its a conflict with the SLTA we may see it elsewhere.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Sounds like the modem you are using on the laptop is not v92 compliant. You said it was a v90 something. I believe this might be the problem. Try using a pcmcia modem that is 56k v92 compliant. Or use the windows modem log (under modem properties) to record a log then look at it and see if there are connection problems. It may be fixed at the v92 protocol on the sites usr modem.

Best Data modems are what I have the best luck with. Lonstation will only work well with Win 2K with service pak 2 and not XP unless you upgrade to the newest version.
