What is a dedicated outdoor air system? Where would you find it used in HVAC, how does it work, and what are some of the components that make it make it work? Thanks

A large book warehouse I work in has Gas heaters with 100% outdoor air. It also has huge make up air fans that they use in the summer. They have no cooling.

Probably they are talking about a heat recovery ventilator. (HRV). This is a separate system that brings in and exhausts outdoor air without the use of the buildings heating and cooling systems.
Google "heat recovery ventilators'' and see if this is what you are asking about.

Dedicated outdoor air systems are becoming more popular as ventilation requirements become more strict. Unlike a package rooftop a/c unit, a DOAS can handle outside air requirements with less problems. They will often be used in conjunction with package units , VRF systems, VAV , and commercial restaurant designs. They come in all sorts of configurations, heat only heat/cooling,indirect cooiling, energy recovery, etc. To fully understand them ,one must have a good understanding of psychrometrics. I deal with them quite often, as we are a startup company for a major mfg. of these type of equipment.

Carrier, for one, makes a unit for 100% outdoor air, we installed 2 in a school, used to partially cool fresh air and introduce it into the conditioned air ductwork.
