Having recently switched from an old gravity feed furnace to forced air (Carrier Comfort 80 gas furnace), we've been amazed at how much drier the air in our home has been! So, I'm now seriously considering getting a whole house humidifier.

I've recently started researching these, and a couple of obvious solutions seem to be the Carrier humidifier (keep it in the family), and the Aprilaire (since that's the filter we're getting). Further, I'm going to ensure the thermostat we get also has an integrated/programmable humidistat.

But I'm still a n00b as far as humidifiers go, so was hoping I could get some info on these questions?

- Will a water line need to be run to the humidifier?
- What's the difference between "bypass" v. "power" humidifiers?
- Are there any mold issues to be concerned about when using whole-house humidification?
- I've read some bits about humidifier cleaning ... how often shall I expect to have to clean out a whole-house humidifier?
- Any brand recommendations; are there significant differences amongst the different brands?

Finally, I've heard some small bit about Desert Springs' (http://www.just-humidifiers.com/) alternative humidifiers ... has anyone heard of or had experience with this brand?
