There is no AC or heat coming into the vents in one of the rooms in my home. One contractor suggested maybe it's time for a new system. Should I get a second opinion or check for blockage myself?
That makes no sense, one vent no air, doesn't indicate you need a new system,or that a new system would correct it.
Tell us more, because it sounds like a scam, but we don't have the details.

Well, in my son's room there is no AC or heat coming from his vent. It has been this way since we moved into the home although we didn't notice for about 3 months because it was moderate weather and we didn't use the system much.
There is absolutely nothing coming out of this vent but all of the other vents in the other rooms are fine. The only thing I can think of is that there is some blockage. I explained this condition to a contractor over the phone and he wanted to come and inspect the system but he was very eager to say that maybe it was time to get a new system because of a similar problem he had rectified for another customer. I became a little suspicious and did not call another contractor because I didn't know how to protect myself from being scammed. What should I do?

I would ask if you had a faucet that had no water coming out of it, would you replace all of the plumbing in the house ?
Sounds like you should contact another contractor to get a "real" opinion.

Unusual that he'd say that, now if he thought you were getting to little air to the room, instead of no air,it could be different.
He may have installed a variable speed system and corrected low air flow,to a room previously.
If there's No air,it's likely a damper is closed or the duct is colapsed or disconnected.
What type equipment, and where are the ducts installed?
Have you checked the grille to be sure the damper at the grille is open?
Is the filter clean?
Note, there may be a damper in the duct system as well.
