i have a 3 ton split system my boss wants me to change out the condenser with a 4 ton. its now got a 30 degree split and i put in 16 lbs of freon (required 6 lbs for the 3 ton) oh we also removed the reversing valve making it a straight cool system. but heres the kicker i only have 40 psi on the suction side. am i undercharged ? the 4 ton cond is twice as big as the 27 year old 3 ton that i removed.
dont blame me just doing as i was told :eek2:

changed out a scroll compressor (100/100 psi both sides) due to txv not shifting all the way causing pressures to tack out. do scroll compressors have valves ? well anyway i have yet to return with the wrong size compressor and to remove the reversing valve...

Are you changing the whole condensing unit or just the compressor ? And scrolls have scrolls. :toetap:

From post #8. TXVs don't shift, I am sure you meant the reversing valve. In your first post you said the reversing valve was removed.
but heres the kicker i only have 40 psi on the suction side. am i undercharged ? No, you almost certainly have an evaporator coil with restricted cap tubes...especially in Phoenix due to the compressor oil breaking down and creating a varnish coating inside of the cap tubes. That is the reason for the overcharge not forcing enough refrigerant flow to get the suction pressure above 40 psig. Check it out and have your boss find some good used cap tubes. :D

This reminds me of a funny story. (I am not taking a cheap shot at 180intheshade, this happen a few years ago, it is not aim at anybody on this forum, if event describes you, it is purely coincidental.). I am posting it because I think it’s funny.
The following is a true Story:
There is a Chinese super Buffet restaurant @ the corner 16th street and Camelback road. I had installed all their refrigeration equipment in 2000.
3-4 years back, the owner of this restaurant (Cheap boss) asks me where they can get a replacement compressor. (Warranty certificate says; five years part, ten years on compressor. I sold them the equipments). They wanted me to provide a new compressor under warranty. I told them No. For commercial use, it is only five years. I ask him (the boss -owner of restaurant) what seen to be the problem. He told me his technician told him the compressor was bad. I ask him; what does it do or not do? What seen to be the problem? He said his tech told him the valve is shot, I ask him if I may speak to the technician.
I ask the technician why he thinks the valve is shot. He said both hi side and low side is 100 PSI. I ask him, "HOW MANY Valves DO YOU THINK Is IN a SCROLL COMPRESSOR", his reply; "TWO" ... I told him, Scroll compressor doesn't have any valves. A moment of silence follow by a haaw (can not hold his breath any longer)..
I suggest to him, he should not be working on this equipment. He said; ' just doing what he is told’
To make a long story short, the technician is a self employed handyman; the Boss is the Restaurant owner. Not to be confuse with the boss of a repair shop. The technician simply does what he is told by the boss.

on the first unit we removed the rv valve completely. turned it into a straight cool system. cond coil is twice as big as old one. the evap on top of the furnace was untouched. charging the system back up i put in 16 pounds of freon (6 pounds was removed originally) got a 30 degree split with 40 psi suction 170 head. since im mix matching the system and 16 lbs of freon i left it alone. this is suppose to be a temp fix something to pass home inspection then install new split systems
the 2nd job was the change out of the scroll compressor with a 1 ton bigger recip compressor and after installing that the rev. valve had to be replaced also. (doing that today)
the question does scroll have valves little bit of a brain fart there i asked that in a more of a "thinking out loud"

Back in the 50's I knew a tech who misread the label of a room air conditioner that called for 18 ounces of refrigerant. He only had 14 pounds with him and he came back to the shop to get more.
As a rookie, I once overharged a small under the counter refrigerator that had an automatic expansion valve with R-12. It worked fine for about six weeks, but after defrosting it,it didn't cool. I went out and put my gauges on it and started it up. The head pressure pegged put at 450 psig and it shut off on klixon. That was my introduction to an automatic expansion valve. I let out a LOT of R-12.
