View Full Version : Oil in Heat Pump

My heat pump quit working, compressor runs but no heat or cooling, I called out the Lennox repairman and he said there isn't any freon in the system. He can't come back until the end of this week or next week to find/fix the leak, he said it will take most of a day. He said if the A frame or the heat pump is what's leaking my Lennox 10 year gaurantee will cover it, if it's anywhere else I must pay. When he opened the back of the heat pump the inside was soaked with oil, the oil also leaked out onto the concrete pad. It seems to be a very light oil, almost colorless. I'm pretty sure the compressor has oil in it, but is there oil in the coils in the heat pump? Is there any oil in the line that runs from the heat pump to the air handler? Since the oil is inside the cover of the HP would mean that the HP itself has a leak, correct?

I took all of your advice, I don't know if you remember but I'm the guy with the 2100 cfm AH that has the 8 X 16 supply and return duct with 19 registers. When he saw the way the system was set up he just shook his head. When he comes back he is going to do some calculation and duct sizing to see how he will fix it.

Thanks again for your help.
Frank

There is oil in the compresor that mixes very well with the refrigerant. So oil is in everypart of the system. When you look for a leak you look for the oil that comes out with the refrigerant.
