I have now had 4 salesman come to my home to quote on a new gas furnace. My furnace of 31 years is still running and it is April so they know I am not desperate. However it seems very odd to me that not one will do a heat loss calc, as they all seem to think they know from experience exactly just what I need. I have been told between 37000 and 70000 btu is what I require. Each salesman has quoted the smallest unit that they sell.
Is this just a bunch of guy's trying to sell me anything?
Do they know my small 2 storey in south Ontario Canada only needs a limited btu and therefore just quote the smallest they have and hope for the best? They all suggest 2 stage variable and I think it may be just to lower the btu output on 1st stage, because they know I'll rarely see 2nd stage. And ofcourse the profit. I have a grossly oversized builder furnace now; and a too large a/c unit(you know the one, plenty cold and dick all dehumidification. I don't want oversized again. Help me PRO's.

When you invite any new contractors to your home, let them know you will be requiring a heat loss/gain and if they can't help you, you're not interested in their bid...

Phone Customer Service of whatever they call Hydro there now and see if they will run a load for you.
