I worked on a carrier 17DR today that has a trane purifier purge.I myself have installed quite a few trane purges on carrier chillers.I typically use the service valve on the top of the condenser for my pick up line and use the old purge pick up line(after drilling it out and retapping for a 1/2" angle valve) for my liquid return. The one I worked on today was installed with the liquid return going to the bottom of crossover before the evaporator.Does anyone know if this is ok.Seems to me that the purge would not have enough flow through it to remove noncondensibles. Will the flow become stagnant.Chiller did have some noncondesibles present today.Valved off purge and suction line temp. pulled down to -5.1F opened valves to put purge in operation and suction line temp. rose to 90F.

Trane purifier purge is supposed to be gravity return to the condenser at the same pressure as the pick up line. Since there is no float valve like the old Trane purges had, the lower pressure in the crossover is keeping the purgepot pressure low as well. Which is why when you valved off the return it worked properly.

I moved the return line on Thursday and the suction line temp. started to drop within two minutes. The purge has since removed all noncondensibles and the chiller is running great.Chiller has dual compressors just a little air causes them to go into a stall. I'm glad this one is put to rest.
